Looking back: February 2019

Are you one of those people who are always looking back and reflecting on where you’ve been in relation to where you are now?

I’m a sucker for reminiscing. This usually involves laughing about a joke that I heard two weeks ago, or swiping through old photos at least once a month (probably more). I like to recall big eventful days or the small, simple ones that were enjoyable in their own right.

There’s a quote by Henry David Thoreau:

Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.

And I think that’s a rather depressing way to look at life. When something troubling has happened or you feel like you wasted your time in a situation that you got away from, looking back can cause pain or regret. Looking back can also sometimes hinder you from planning a great future. But looking back can mean really good things for you, too. Looking back can help you be grateful for what you have, and it can help you remember the good times when all you can think of is the bad. If you’re always looking forward, you can lose sight of how far you’ve come. Reminiscing about fun days out, or that amazing ice cream you had, or just a really lovely sunny day spent with someone you love can make you feel cozy and content. But it doesn’t have to be that obvious, either. It can be tiny things that made a shitty day less shitty somehow.

February has been a weirdly negative month for a lot of people I know. There must have been something in the air because I’ve experienced nothing but complaining, bad news, worrying, and stress from my friends and acquaintances.

The month hasn’t been the best for me, either, to tell you the truth; but not all days can be, can they? I will say that when I start to think about all the positive things that happened in the last month, they snowball and counteract some of the bad.

Here’s what I’m grateful for in February 2019:

  1. I got published in print for the very first time in my life! I had set being published as a long term goal that I wanted to hit in the next 12 months, and I smashed it in six weeks. You can read the piece I wrote here for Wireframe Magazine (page 18 onward) – we also found the magazine in WHSmith and did a silly photo shoot of me posing with it.

  2. I made myself play a PS4 game after two years of not playing any console games, and I fell in love again. It also made me feel better about life in general, too.

  3. I accidentally shaved a huge chunk of Flint’s fur and he looks hilarious. I couldn’t stop laughing about it for about three days. At least it grows back eventually!

  4. I got to rearrange my desk area, which is both my work and play space. I now have tons more room for my figurines, and I feel less cramped. Yay!

  5. I bleached my hair and now I love my strawberry blonde locks. It gave me a real confidence boost!

  6. I went for a run with my husband for the first time together since 2011-ish, and I loved every second! I also didn’t get shin splints or ankle trouble for once.

  7. We had a heatwave on the weekend, and it was the most beautiful day we’d had in what felt like a year. I love Winter, but I’m glad Spring is on its way.

  8. I had two visits to my favourite ice-cream shop, back to back, one day after the other. Cappuccino and Choc-Hazelnut ice-creams FTW.

  9. I made myself laugh by bringing personal ketchup to the beach in case of spontaneous fish and chips. And I used it!

  10. I started using my special notebooks that look so pretty that I haven’t been able to use them (until now!) and I may start trying to bullet journal for mental health, or for productivity, I haven’t decided.

  11. I bought some new coloured biros!

  12. I’m in the most positive and loving community on Twitch, and I broke down in tears on stream which I’ve never done before because I’m usually too shy to show emotions to that degree. Thank you to my wonderful husband and the community he has built for being awesome. The love some people show is overwhelming.

  13. Someone came to me for help, and I was able to give them advice.
